Biotech Training Programs

An industry focused training program along or after a biotechnology degree helps in adapting students to the needs of the biotech industry and enhances their career prospects. We have been receiving many queries from students on this subject. Some of the industry-oriented biotech training modules are given here.

Biotech Industrial Training Program

The Department of Biotechnology facilitates biotechnology training for postgraduate students (MSc/MTech) in the industry. The students are selected for practical hands-on training in various biotech industries for a period of six months. This scheme is being implemented through the Biotech Industrial Training Program (BITP) of the Biotech Consortium India Ltd (BCIL), New Delhi. The objective of BITP is to provide practical exposure to candidates who wish to start their career after post-graduation but do not have the requisite experience in biotechnology. This program orients them to the needs of the industry and makes them more relevant and acceptable for placement. Under BITP 2004-05, 95 trainees were placed in 50 reputed biotech companies and in view of the encouraging response both from industry and postgraduate biotechnologists, in the coming year, the program intends to place 120 trainees. The program is launched every year generally in the month of September.

First the requisition from companies willing to impart-training is obtained. Short-listed candidates matching requirements of companies are interviewed by an expert committee and the profiles of candidates found suitable are sent to companies for their acceptance. IBI Biosolutions' industrial training in bioinformatics

Chandigarh-based IBI Biosolutions, a developer of custom software systems for biotech and pharmaceutical research and development offers industrial training in the bioinformatics arena. It offers two training modules of 3 and 6 months each. The aim of the training is to first impart software and bioinformatics skill to the trainee and later to make the trainee use those skills to develop a full fledged bioinformatics project. The courses are designed keeping the industrial requirements into consideration. Biotechnology workshops and training programs by G-Biosciences

DOEACC course in bioinformatics

DOEACC Society, an autonomous body of Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology has introduced bioinformatics courses at various levels-O, A and B Level. Although the B level course is presently being offered only at the DOEACC Kolkata center, the O and A levels of training is available at 12 locations of DOEACC across India. These bioinformatics courses are in line with the DOEACC computer courses. The syllabus for DOEACC courses has been prepared by an expert committee comprising leading academicians and professionals from across the country.

IBAB's lab course in bio-techniques

Bangalore-based Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) conducts a six-month course in biotech lab techniques. The course aims to fill the demand for reliable technical expertise in the area of molecular biology/biotechnology. These include handling bacterial culture, protein purification and analysis, recombinant DNA technology, microarrays, etc and increases the competence of the students through small research projects towards the end of the course. IIT Delhi offers summer training in biotechnology

The Department of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, IIT Delhi conducts a short-term practical training course in biotechnology. The duration of the training program is about 50 days and takes place in the month of May/June. The course aims to provide exposure to some of the modern experimental tools and protocols of biochemical engineering and biotechnology to MSc (Biotechnology), BTech (Chemical/ Biochemical Engineering) students. There is also a provision of project work for the candidates.

Academy for Clinical Excellence offers courses in clinical research

The Academy for Clinical Excellence (ACE) provides training in clinical research.

Unipune's Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics

The Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune offers an advanced diploma in Bioinformatics (ADB), which was one of the first formal bioinformatics training courses in India.
